sunday. another boggy tramp over the fells, from stang yule through to marshaw via hawthornthwaite fell. This was organised as the estates are private. bagged the trig on hawthormthwaite (great name). The trig is unusual in that it stands some 6 to 8 feet in the air. the ground (peat bog !) around the trig has erroded leaving the trig point high and dry. It seems it has another 6 feet of foundation left !

just below the top is perhaps the best vista in the fells, a wide sweep from fairsnape through to wards stone and beyond.

other notes on route - snipe, hen harrier (the sky dancer), kestrel and stone chat. weather wet wet wet at start but by the end of the day absolutely brilliant sun and autumnal colours.

great place.
